Additional transcoding option

Transcoding videos is something we like to believe we do great. Still, as we say that we do consider that there is a lot of things we can still improve.

Today we want to present you a new option we have added that helps with the same.

Transcoding Settings

At this time if you go to your application > Manage you will see a new panel called "Transcoding Settings". This will allow you to see various options related to your transcoding preferences. Currently it hosts two new options.

Force Creation of ALL Streams

This option turns on the forced creation on all of the streams, including the default stream for which you have the option right under.

By setting up this option to be checked you will immediately have all of the streams created for every video that comes in. This is true even for the streams that would otherwise not have been created.

Force Creation of Default Stream

Unlike the first option this one just forces the creation of the original stream. This way you always know that you have original stream and the default stream created (if this is checked). It might however not create other streams if there does not seem to be needed.

Why are these options needed?

Well, they are not. For most of our customers the default works best, however in some cases that might not be true. That said, let us go into more detail so you can choose for yourself.

Our system by default looks to not do transcodings if they would not really be needed. For example if the original stream is such that it can be played back right away. Like that, the original stream might also match the stream resolution you are expecting, in which case you do not need to have additional processing happen.

Now for some of our customers there is a requirement to always have original stream they would ignore and default stream that they would use. Same is true for other streams.

If you only need the default stream to be created, then the second option - "Force Creation of Default Stream" is all you need. If you need all of the streams to be created regardless of "how it looks" to our system, then the first one is the way to go with.
