Always Collect Talent

The most successful founders of start-ups are continually looking for, and collecting, great talent – whether or not they need the talent right away. This was a key point in the Ziggeo-sponsored talk by Union Square Venture’s Albert Wenger -- which you can view here.  Albert stressed that when the head of a start-up meets someone extraordinary, he or she will typically remember that person with the idea of one day hiring him or her.

In other words, a smart CEO will build up a network of impressive talent to draw on in the future. When meeting someone who seems extraordinary, he or she will take the time to learn more about the person and rank them internally as someone who might be worth pursuing if and when the need arises.

Where to look for the best talent? The answer is everywhere – through conferences, companies, social media, friends, etc. And when one finds great talent, it is important keep up an ongoing relationship with the person.

Founders of start-ups are like talent scouts who are constantly on the look out for the next star to help make their company the next blockbuster. They don’t wait until they have the appropriate job opening to start identifying and collecting talent.

By then, it may be too late.
