What it Takes to Build Your Own Video Recorder

If you're considering building your own video recording solution, here are 6 tips to keep in mind (we've done it ourselves so we really know):

  1. Make sure videos can be both recorded and played across all browsers, operating systems and devices, including: Chrome; Safari; Firefox; Opera; Internet Explorer; Mac OS X; Microsoft Windows; Linux (e.g. Ubuntu); iOS (iPhone, iPad); and Android.
  2. Build underlying technology that works both with WebRTC as well as with Flash (for systems that don't support WebRTC).
  3. Check that videos can be recorded and played across older browsers/systems/devices.
  4. When a new version of a browser or device is released, test and (if need be) quickly adjust your technology to ensure it records/plays well there.
  5. Test and retest your video recorder/player on IE8 which for some reason is a real pain to maintain.
  6. Arrange for transcoding to be done in-house; otherwise, if handled by outside parties, your videos may stand in a long transcoding queue before being processed for playback.
