When a Hurdle to Recruiting Turns Out To Be A Good Thing

Turns out setting up hurdles in recruiting can be a good thing. As one of our customers, an employer looking for an account manager, explained, when they posted a job on CraigsList, they got hundreds of responses. They had little idea whom to invite in for an interview. Then the employer asked each candidate to record and submit a video answering particular questions. Only a dozen or two took the time to record and submit their video. As such, it was an ideal way to separate out those who were truly interested in the position from those who weren’t willing to go the extra step. Hurdle Seeing who recorded a video, our customer could easily identify whom they wanted to interview in person. And from that in-person interview, they hired her on the spot. The employer was delighted to have the video questions serve as a hurdle. Without it, they’d be at a loss as to whom to interview. As an added bonus, in addition to seeing the video itself, the employer could quickly see who had the technical wherewithal to record and submit a video, who followed directions well, and who was able to quickly respond to their request — all important traits in the candidate they were looking to hire.
