The main reason companies are turning to APIs to build their products is so they can focus their engineering talent on developing their own unique intellectual property.

Companies understand they don't need to reinvent the wheel and dedicate talent to creating what already exists as an off-the-shelf solution. Day to day maintenance to keep the technology updated also needs to factor in -- all handled by the API provider (at least the good ones).
