The Best Interview Question for Sales Positions
When interviewing for a sales position, ask: “Are you better at landing new clients or servicing existing ones?”
Then ask for specific examples of how the candidate managed to do both.
The candidate who is gifted at bringing in clients should be able to give examples of how he or she developed a creative sales strategy, fine-tuned a compelling sales pitch, and reeled in a big fish. The candidate who has a knack for maintaining existing relationships should be able to dazzle you with an insight for existing and ongoing needs. And a little charm doesn’t hurt, either.
Don’t forget that applicants who claim to be responsible for a certain amount of sales in their past jobs may have simply inherited that business from others or brought in the business themselves and passed it on. Until you know which one, don’t be “sold” on anybody.
